Painting Portraits in Oils with Sara Reeve

Participants will explore portrait painting in oils with artist and tutor Sara Reeve, developing techniques for seeing and mixing subtle skin tones and painting expressive eyes, characterful noses and lifelike mouths. The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced painters looking to bring more colour and energy to their work.

The first day focuses on oil studies from photographs, simplifying facial features and colour mixing with a reduced palette. On the second day, participants will work from a professional live model, applying their learning to an alla prima portrait. Sara will provide demonstrations, individual guidance and feedback throughout, supporting participants as they work towards a finished painting.

Participants should bring a palette, palette knife, an A3-sized white pre-primed wooden panel or canvas board, oil-painting brushes, rags or kitchen roll, an apron and suitable painting clothes, along with the specified oil paints. Oil-painting paper and low-odour brush-cleaning solvents are provided, and each participant will have a drawing board, chair and easel.
